DD404-488 is a 404 differential carrier assembly with ratio 488, sold on an exchange basis. The carrier passes drive torque on to the wheels while letting the two sides turn at different speeds, which is what lets the truck corner. A differential that was quiet and begins to howl, whine or rumble is usually showing worn gears or bearings that no longer hold the gear alignment correctly.
