Automatic or manual?

An automatic slack adjuster takes up brake clearance on its own as the linings wear. A manual slack adjuster has to be adjusted by hand at service intervals. Most trucks built for the US market run automatic adjusters; manual adjusters are still found on older equipment and some off-road units.

Matching the right adjuster

Slack adjusters are matched by camshaft diameter, spline count and arm length, so have those, or the part number off your old adjuster, before you order. Meritor lists them in the part name as the cam size and spline count, for example 1.50-28 is a 1-1/2 inch camshaft with 28 splines.
