An air brake chamber turns air pressure into push rod force: air pushes on a flexible diaphragm that drives the rod outward, and when the air is exhausted the internal spring returns everything to the released position. A leaking or ruptured diaphragm lets air escape, which weakens the brake and can leave it unable to apply at all.
