The Bendix 802917 is an E-6 foot brake valve, the pedal-operated control that meters air to the brakes whenever the driver presses the treadle. Foot valves of this style feed two separate air circuits, so one circuit can still brake if the other loses pressure. The pedal moves the first section directly, and that section's output air drives the second, which keeps both circuits applying together. Air that keeps hissing from the exhaust with the pedal released points to a leaking inlet seat, while a leak only when the pedal is pressed points to a worn exhaust seat or piston seal.
