Air enters through the inlet port, pushes on a rolling diaphragm, and drives the push rod forward to apply the brake. On cam-type foundation brakes the push rod yoke connects to a slack adjuster, which rotates the camshaft, and an internal spring returns everything to the released position when air is let off.
