Bendix 278599N is the DC-4 double check valve for an air brake system. It directs air into a common line from whichever of two sources is at the higher pressure, so a system can draw on either supply or be controlled from either of two points. Inside, a shuttle slides toward the lower-pressure inlet and seals it off, which keeps air from bleeding back into the weaker source, and it moves the other way if the pressures reverse.
