The 131040 Eaton replacement pinion spider gear is a differential side pinion for Dana R170/S170 differentials. It is one of the small bevel gears that sits on the spider cross shaft inside the differential case and engages the axle gears on both sides. That layout lets one axle shaft turn faster than the other in a turn while both wheels keep receiving power; driving straight, the gear just rides around with the case. It works in a bath of differential fluid, and wear or contamination in the case can spread quickly to the other gears, so check the rest of the gear set whenever the carrier is open.
