The toothed ring turns with its shaft, and each tooth passing the speed sensor gives the electronic controller a pulse it uses to read rotation speed. When teeth crack, corrode or go missing, or debris packs in between them, the signal turns erratic and warning lights can follow, so a damaged ring is worth replacing rather than working around.
