On a tandem rear suspension the equalizer beam rocks to pass load from one axle to the other, and the bushing at its end is the pivot that lets it move while cushioning shock and vibration. A worn bushing can let metal contact metal, which shows up as a dull knock from the rear tandem over rough roads. If the bushings fail, the axles are allowed more movement than the suspension was designed for, and the rear of the truck can feel looser and less planted in sweeping turns.
