It carries Meritor Production lining, lining number R403, with a Platinum Shield III shoe coating and FMSI number 4715QP. The factory parts list carries it as a Brake Shoe And Lining Assembly, two per assembly, in the MX-120/MX-120HR Front Drive Steer Axle brakes (item 86) and the MX-140/MX-160 Front Drive Steer Axle brakes (item 104).
A lined shoe presses against the inside of the drum to slow the truck through friction. Worn lining shows up as longer stops and a squeal under braking, and grinding means the friction material is gone and metal is on the drum, which can ruin the drum too.
