The 2234E187 Meritor side gear is a differential internal gear that meshes with the spider (cross) pinions inside the differential case and splines onto the axle shaft, transferring torque to the wheel end while allowing the wheels to turn at different speeds through a corner. Side gears are normally replaced as a matched set with the mating spider pinions and thrust washers when the differential is opened up, so check the condition of those parts during your rebuild.
