The 2234N846 Meritor side gear is a differential internal gear that splines to the axle shaft and meshes with the differential spider pinions, splitting torque between the wheels while allowing them to turn at different speeds. Side gears are normally replaced as a matched set with the spider pinions and thrust washers any time the differential case is opened, since worn or chipped gear teeth will quickly damage the replacement parts around them.
