Eaton 131214 slinger, a differential part. A drive axle has no oil pump, so the gears themselves throw oil around the housing to coat the bearings and gears, and a slinger is part of that splash path. When lubricant stops reaching those parts they run hot and noisy, which can start as gear whine and end in metal-on-metal damage.
