Mounting shims are used between the transmission housing and the PTO, you stack shims until you get .010-.012 backlash between the gear of the PTO and the drive gear in the Transmission once the mounting nuts/bolts on the PTO are tight. This is why the shifter cover on the PTO is left loose, so you can remove the shift cover, reach in the PTO to check the backlash between the gears while installing. Once complete, reinstall the shift cover and tighten bolts to 25 ft-lb.
