Semi truck PTO questions we get every day

What is a PTO on a semi truck?

A power take-off (PTO) is a gearbox that bolts to an opening on the side or bottom of the truck's transmission. It taps engine power off the transmission's countershaft and sends it to a hydraulic pump, blower, winch or generator. That is what raises a dump body, runs a wet kit on a tractor, drives a vacuum tank or turns a mixer drum. The PTO is engaged only when the auxiliary equipment is needed and idles the rest of the time.

What are the parts of a PTO system?

A complete installation has four pieces: the PTO unit itself (6-bolt, 8-bolt or 10-bolt, sized to the transmission opening), the shift control (a cable lever, an air switch or a hot-shift electric solenoid), the output (a direct-mount pump flange or a yoke and driveshaft with slip yoke and U-joints to a remote pump), and the hydraulic pump it drives. Mounting studs, gaskets and shims complete the kit, and the gasket pack sets the gear backlash, so it is not an optional part.

What are the most common PTO problems?

The PTO will not engage or stay engaged (low air pressure to the shifter, a stretched cable, a worn shift fork or a failed solenoid), gear whine or grinding (wrong backlash after a reinstall, or a worn output gear), and oil leaks at the mounting face or output shaft (a hardened gasket or a worn seal). Most of these are repaired with a shift cover kit, a seal kit or a gasket set rather than a new unit. Use the parts-breakdown manuals linked above to find the exact kit for your series.

How much does it cost to put a PTO on a semi?

The unit is the biggest line: a basic manual-shift 6-bolt unit costs a few hundred dollars, while a heavy-duty 10-bolt hot-shift unit for an automatic runs into the low thousands. Add the pump, a driveshaft if the pump is remote-mounted, controls and shop labor for the install. Call our PTO experts at (877) 776-4600 with your transmission model and what you need to run, and we will spec the unit and quote the whole kit.
