Eaton Fuller Transmission Fluid and Oil Capacity
Two questions come up on every Eaton Fuller oil change: which lubricant the transmission takes, and how much of it. This page answers both, with the capacity figures Eaton publishes per model number.
Which lubricant does an Eaton Fuller take?
Current Eaton Fuller manual and automated transmissions call for PS-386 synthetic transmission lubricant. PS-386 replaced the older PS-164 rev 7 specification effective January 1, 2017. PS-278 remains listed for applications specified with it.
Eaton's rules for what goes in the gearbox:
- Use an approved lubricant. Eaton states that lubricants not meeting its requirements affect warranty coverage.
- Never mix standard and synthetic oils in the same transmission. When switching types, every affected component must be drained completely.
- Do not mix grades.
- Do not add additives or friction modifiers.
Oil capacity by model
Eaton lists capacity by model number, with the prefix included only where it changes the figure. An RTLO-18918B is found on the 18918 row, an RTLO-16913A on 16913, and so on.
Units built with a PTO or an oil cooler hold more than the figures below. These values are approximate. The fill hole is always the final reference.

How to check and fill it
The gearbox level is read at the fill plug on the side of the gear case, not by volume. Oil is at the correct level when it is even with the bottom of the fill hole and seeps out when the plug is removed.
- Remove the transmission oil fill plug.
- Check that the drain plug is properly installed.
- Fill with approved oil until it starts flowing out of the fill hole.
- Clean the fill plug, install it and torque it.
If the transmission has an oil cooler, fill it as well: with the transmission full, put the vehicle in neutral, start the engine and release the clutch pedal so the pump fills the cooler. After a minute, shut the engine off, recheck the level and top it off. Repeat until the level holds.
One more thing worth checking on a chassis that keeps running low: if the transmission operating angle exceeds 12 degrees, proper lubrication will not occur and the unit needs an oil pump or cooler kit. Operating angle is the mounting angle in the chassis plus the percent of upgrade expressed in degrees.
Genuine Eaton lubricant we stock
- PS-386 synthetic, 1 gallon (K-PS386-BOX)
- PS-386 synthetic, 5 gallon pail (K-PS386-PAIL)
- PS-386 synthetic, 55 gallon drum (K-PS386-DRUM)
- PS-278, 5 gallon pail (K-PS278-PAIL)
- PS-386 synthetic, case of four 1 gallon jugs (5564546-M4)
- PS-386 synthetic, 5 gallon pail (5564543M)
- PS-386 synthetic, 55 gallon drum (5564544)
All sizes are on our Transmission Fluids & Lubricants page.
A 28 pint heavy-duty gearbox takes 3.5 gallons, so the 5 gallon pail covers one change with oil left over. Fleet shops changing several units at a time usually take the drum.
While the oil is out
An oil change is the usual moment a leak or a worn seal turns up. We stock the gaskets, seals and bearing kits for these units, plus complete overhaul kits.
