How to Read a Chelsea PTO Model Number
The first digits of a Chelsea model number are the series, so a 442XBAHX-A3XK is a 442 Series PTO. The letters and numbers that follow define the build, including the gear, speed ratio, shifter type and output. Two PTOs from the same series are not interchangeable unless the full model number matches, so always order by the complete number on the PTO tag.
We offer Chelsea PTOs for trucks in the following models: 221, 230, 231, 236, 238, 2442, 247, 249, 252, 267, 270, 271, 277, 278, 280, 290, 340, 348, 352, 440, 442, 447, 489, 511, 523, 541, 560, 590, 626, 628, 630, 645, 660, 680, 823, 852, 863, 870, 877, 880, 885, 890, 892, 897, 899, 901, 912, 941 Series, CAT-D Series, CAT-H Series and EOC 329650X. Discontinued Chelsea PTO Series and Their Replacements
Parker Chelsea has replaced several older series with upgraded designs. If your PTO tag shows one of these series, order the current series instead:
- Chelsea 280 Series: replaced by the Chelsea 281 Series PTO.
- Chelsea 870 Series: replaced by the Chelsea 871 Series PTO.
- Chelsea 440 Series: replaced by the Chelsea 442 Series PTO.
In most cases the rest of the model number carries over, so a 280GGFJP-B8RF becomes a 281GGFJP-B8RF. Call (877) 776-4600 with your full model number and we will confirm the correct replacement before you order. Repair parts for the older units are still listed in the 280 Series, 870 Series and 440 Series parts manuals.
Chelsea PTOs by Transmission
Every Chelsea PTO is built for a specific mounting aperture and transmission family. Start with the transmission in the truck, then pick the series that matches its PTO opening.
- Eaton Fuller and other 6-bolt manual transmissions: the 442 Series fits virtually all 6-bolt applications, the 660 Series covers medium to heavy duty work up to 375 lb-ft, the 272 and 282 Series are the hot shift options, and the 340 Series adds forward and reverse for winch work. The 541 Series mounts on the rear countershaft of Eaton Fuller Advantage and UltraShift transmissions.
- 8-bolt manual transmissions (Eaton Fuller, Mack, Tremec, Meritor): the 489 Series is the mechanical shift standard with no adapter plate needed, the 680 Series adds a deep mount option for Mack, the 880 and 823 Series handle heavy and extra heavy duty loads, and the 348 Series is the 8-bolt forward and reverse unit.
- Allison 1000, 2000 and 2400 Series, and Aisin (RAM trucks): the 252 Series.
- Allison 3000 and 4000 Series (10-bolt): the 281 and 871 Series are the PowerShift clutch type units, the 288 and 878 Series are their constant mesh (non-shiftable) versions, the 897 Series moves the pump flange to the rear for clearance, and the 287 and 877 Series are the high torque constant mesh units for Allison and CAT 10-bolt transmissions.
- Allison 4700 Series: the 892 and 899 Series, both with wet spline outputs and a rear mounted pump flange.
- Ford Super Duty: the 210 Series for the 10R140 and the 249 Series for the 6R140, in 2WD and 4WD versions.
- Tight clearance or rear mount apertures: the 511 and 524 Series rear mount PTOs. When the transmission cannot carry the torque at all, the 912 Series split shaft gearbox mounts in the driveline instead.
- Need to change output rotation or clear an obstacle? The 626, 630 and 645 Series geared adapters sit between the transmission and the PTO.
Chelsea PTO Questions
What does a Chelsea PTO do?
A power take-off bolts to an opening on the truck's transmission and uses engine power to drive auxiliary equipment: a hydraulic pump for a dump body, wet kit or crane, a blower, a winch, a vacuum pump or a water pump. The PTO is engaged only when that equipment is needed. Parker Chelsea builds PTOs for manual and automatic transmissions in 6-bolt, 8-bolt and 10-bolt mounting patterns, in mechanical, air, hydraulic and electric over hydraulic shift types.
How do I identify my Chelsea PTO?
Every Chelsea PTO carries a tag with the full model number, and the first three digits are the series. A tag that reads 489XKAHX-A3XD is a 489 Series unit. Order by the complete number on the tag, because two PTOs from the same series can have different gear ratios, shift types and outputs. If the tag is missing or unreadable, count the bolts on the mounting flange, note the transmission make and model, and call (877) 776-4600 with that information and we will identify it.
Why is my Chelsea PTO not engaging?
The cause depends on the shift type. On an air shift unit, check for low air pressure, a leaking or blocked air line and the cab switch. On a hydraulic or electric over hydraulic PowerShift unit, check the fluid level, the solenoid and the pressure switch. On a cable or lever shift unit, a stretched or misadjusted cable is the usual reason. If the PTO shifts but the output does not turn, or it grinds going in, the shifter fork, clutch pack or gears may be worn and the unit needs repair parts. Our Chelsea PTO parts manuals show every component by series, and we stock the repair parts for current and discontinued units.
